Find your nearest passport office by region
You can book any of the 7 offices regardless of where you live, but this is the closest one by geography. If your nearest is fully booked, check the others - availability varies a lot.
| Where you are | Nearest passport office | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| London & South East | London (Royal Docks) | Busiest office - book earliest |
| East of England & East Midlands | Peterborough | On the London Kings Cross line |
| West Midlands (Birmingham) | Peterborough or Liverpool | Similar distance by rail |
| North West (Manchester, Lancashire) | Liverpool | Second busiest office |
| Yorkshire (Leeds, Sheffield) | Durham or Liverpool | Durham usually has shorter waits |
| North East (Newcastle, Sunderland) | Durham | Historically the shortest waits |
| South West (Bristol, Exeter) | Newport or London | Newport is closest for the far South West |
| Wales (Cardiff, Swansea) | Newport | Only Welsh office - no office in Cardiff |
| Scotland (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen) | Glasgow | Only Scottish office |
| Northern Ireland | Belfast | Only Northern Irish office |
Distances are by geography only; HM Passport Office lets you book any location. Standard online applicants do not visit an office at all.
What You Can and Cannot Do at a Passport Office
You cannot walk into a UK passport office. All seven are appointment-only, and the appointment is the last step rather than the first: you apply and pay online through the gov.uk urgent passport service, and only then book a slot. Appointments can be booked up to three weeks in advance and last up to 10 minutes. There is no public counter, no over-the-counter application, and no document-checking service.
- 1 day premium: hand in your old passport, collect the new one from the same office 4 hours later. Adult renewals only. £239.50, or £253.50 for the 54-page frequent traveller passport. Earliest appointment is 2 days after you apply
- 1 week fast track: hand in your application, then the passport is couriered to you a week after the appointment. £192 adult (£206 for 54 pages) and £156.50 child (£170.50 for 54 pages). Earliest appointment is the next day
- Fast track covers renewals, a change of name or other personal details, a replacement for a lost, stolen or damaged passport, and child passports
- Turn up without an appointment. There is no walk-in service at any of the seven offices
- Start or pay for an application at the office. Both happen online before you can book
- Speed up a standard application by attending. Standard applications never involve an office visit
- Get your documents checked. That is the Post Office Check and Send service, which is a separate paid service at a Post Office branch, not an HM Passport Office
- Use premium for a child passport, a first passport, or anything other than an adult renewal

Do you need to visit a passport office?

What to Bring to Your Appointment
- Completed online application and PEX reference number (shown on screen after applying)
- Current passport (or explanation if lost/stolen)
- Two identical passport photos taken within the past month
- Proof of travel booking (flight, Eurostar, or ferry confirmation showing your name and date)
- Supporting documents if name has changed (marriage certificate, deed poll, etc.)
If your documents are incomplete at the appointment, you may not receive your passport. The fee is non-refundable if you miss the appointment without adequate notice.
Passport interview locations: there is no office to attend
The 7 offices above are for fast-track and premium appointments only. They are not where a passport identity interview happens. HM Passport Office no longer runs a network of in-person interview offices: the identity interview is now done by video call, so there is no location to travel to.
- You may be asked to attend if you have never held a UK passport before, or your old passport expired some time ago
- It is more likely for a first adult passport than a straightforward renewal, but it is not automatic
- There is no extra fee: the interview is part of your application, not a paid add-on
- HMPO sends you a letter asking you to phone to book the appointment
- On the day you get an email with a link to the online interview
- It lasts about 30 minutes: questions only you should know, plus a check that your photo looks like you
- You will not get your passport on the day; HMPO finishes its checks first
