BNO renewal fee, in short

Renewing a British National (Overseas) passport costs £116.50 online or £130 by post for adults (children £75.50 online / £89 postal), effective 8 April 2026. You apply through the UK overseas passport service at gov.uk/overseas-passports and pay in pounds sterling wherever you live. Fast track and premium same-day are not available.

What Is a BNO Passport?

A British National (Overseas) passport is a UK travel document issued to Hong Kong permanent residents with British nationality status established before 1997. As of 2021, BNO holders can use a BNO visa to live, work, and study in the UK, with a pathway to citizenship after 5 years.

Who Issues a BNO Passport, and in What Currency?

British National (Overseas) passports are issued only by HM Passport Office in the United Kingdom. There is no Hong Kong-issued BNO passport and no fee schedule in Hong Kong dollars. Whether you apply from Hong Kong, the UK, or anywhere else, you apply through the UK overseas passport service at gov.uk/overseas-passports and pay the standard overseas fee in pounds sterling.

Do not confuse the BNO passport with the HKSAR passport. The HKSAR (Hong Kong Special Administrative Region) passport is a separate document issued by the Hong Kong Immigration Department and priced in Hong Kong dollars. It is not a British passport. This page covers the BNO passport only.

BNO Passport FAQs

How much does it cost to renew a BNO passport?
A BNO passport is renewed through the UK overseas passport service and charged in pounds sterling wherever you apply from. From 8 April 2026: £116.50 adult online or £130 by post; £75.50 child online or £89 by post. There is no separate Hong Kong-issued BNO passport and no HKD fee - all BNO passports are issued by HM Passport Office.
Can I hold both a BNO passport and a full British passport?
In most cases, yes. After 5 years on a BNO visa in the UK you can apply for British citizenship. Once naturalised as a British citizen, you can apply for a full British passport and potentially hold both. Specific rules depend on your circumstances - consult a qualified immigration adviser.
Can I use a BNO passport to travel to the EU?
BNO passport holders do not have automatic visa-free access to all EU countries in the same way as full British passport holders for all purposes. Always check the entry requirements for your specific destination based on the document type you hold. For regular tourism, many destinations allow BNO holders in, but check before travel.
Will getting a BNO passport affect my UK citizenship application?
Holding or renewing a BNO passport does not affect your ability to apply for British citizenship. The BNO passport renewal is independent of the citizenship application process. Always verify your specific situation with UKVI or an immigration specialist.
