How PassportRenewalCost sources UK passport fees

Every UK passport fee on this site is taken from a single authoritative source. The primary sources are HM Passport Office's published schedule on gov.uk and, for BNO Hong Kong-route fees, the Hong Kong Immigration Department (ImmD) schedule. This page lists every source, the calculation framework, the refresh cadence, what is deliberately out of scope, and the corrections process.

Primary sources

Every fee, service-tier definition, and process detail on the site traces back to one of the sources below. Authority and URL are the only things that decide whether a figure is allowed on the site.

In scope

  • UK adult passport renewal cost across all service tiers: standard online, standard postal, fast-track (about 1 week), and premium same-day (4-hour collect).
  • UK child passport (under 16) renewal cost: online, postal, fast-track. Premium same-day is not offered for under-18s. The 5-year validity rule and the countersignature requirement.
  • Overseas UK passport renewal: gov.uk/overseas-passports adult and child fees, courier surcharge, and the fast-track / premium unavailability from abroad.
  • British National (Overseas) passport renewal: ImmD Hong Kong-route schedule (HKD 970 / HKD 1,150) and the UK overseas route (GBP 116.50 adult online).
  • Name change, lost passport, and first passport: same fee as renewal; cancel-first protocol on lost passports.
  • Passport photo guidance: gov.uk photo-checker app DIY route, Photo-Me booth pricing, Boots / high-street booth pricing, and the digital-upload flow for online applications.
  • Passport office appointment booking and the 7 UK office locations: London Victoria, Belfast, Durham, Glasgow, Liverpool, Newport, Peterborough.

Out of scope

  • Immigration and visa advice. Specific entry rules, residency and citizenship questions should be put to UKVI, FCDO travel advice, or a regulated immigration adviser.
  • Per-expediter rate guidance. Commercial passport-expediter services charge significant premiums over HMPO published fees with limited demonstrable benefit for most renewal scenarios. The site describes expediters factually as a market segment but does not publish or compare their rates.
  • Individual case-file correspondence with HMPO. Tracking, identity verification, document evidencing, and counter-signatory acceptance decisions sit with HMPO and the gov.uk online tracker.
  • Naturalisation and citizenship application fees. These are separate fee schedules from passport renewal and are out of scope for this site.
  • Non-UK and non-BNO issuing authorities. The site is UK-only with a BNO Hong Kong-route cross-reference where ImmD is the issuing authority.
  • Substitution for HMPO direct contact on live applications. The HMPO helpline is 0300 222 0000 for live application support.

Calculation framework

UK fee schedule

HMPO published rates effective 8 April 2026: GBP 102 online adult, GBP 115.50 postal adult, GBP 66.50 online child, GBP 80 postal child, GBP 166.50 fast-track adult, GBP 135.50 fast-track child, GBP 239.50 premium adult. Taken from gov.uk/passport-fees with cross-references to gov.uk/renew-adult-passport and gov.uk/get-a-child-passport.

Overseas surcharge

GBP 116.50 adult online, GBP 130 adult postal, GBP 75.50 child online, GBP 89 child postal. Taken from gov.uk/overseas-passports. Fast-track and premium are deliberately UK-only; the site documents this rather than producing an estimate.

Photo cost band

GBP 0 DIY via the gov.uk photo-checker app, GBP 2.95+ online services, GBP 5-8 Photo-Me booth (Photo-Me UK published price page), GBP 10-13 Boots and high-street booths (Boots UK published price page). Photographer band GBP 15-40 from professional studio price pages, treated as an upper bound.

BNO fee derivation

Hong Kong route: ImmD HKSAR schedule (HKD 970 for 32-page, HKD 1,150 for 48-page adult). UK overseas route: gov.uk/overseas-passports (GBP 116.50 adult online). Currency conversion stated as approximate at the LAST_VERIFIED date; the HKD figure is canonical because it is the issued-currency price on the ImmD schedule.

Family-total worked example

Two adults + two children online: (2 x GBP 102) + (2 x GBP 66.50) = GBP 337. Add photo cost if relevant: GBP 337 + (4 x GBP 10) = GBP 377 with Boots booth, or GBP 337 + 0 with DIY app photos. The home-page PassportCalculator surfaces the per-family combinatorial total across adults / children / service tiers, computed entirely in-browser; no inputs are transmitted to a server.

Refresh cadence

HMPO publishes the fee schedule by Statutory Instrument; revisions are typically annual, with the most recent change taking effect 8 April 2026. gov.uk service-tier pages refresh on policy change. ImmD HKSAR BNO fees revise on the ImmD schedule. FCDO travel advice refreshes country-by-country on events. The site runs a single LAST_VERIFIED date constant that drives every freshness indicator at once: the footer Updated stamp, the verified-prices badge, the WebSite schema dateModified, and every Article schema dateModified across the 16 content pages.

Out-of-cycle refresh triggers:

  • HMPO Statutory Instrument fee change.
  • New HMPO service tier added or an existing tier withdrawn.
  • Material revision to a gov.uk renewal-flow page (e.g. process change on the urgent service or overseas route).
  • ImmD HKSAR BNO schedule revision.
  • Flagged correction received via the corrections process below.

Cosmetic date bumps without an underlying source change are not made.

Limitations

  • BNO Hong Kong-route currency volatility. ImmD prices HKD; the approximate GBP equivalent shifts with the HKD/GBP rate at the LAST_VERIFIED date.
  • UK passport office appointment availability varies considerably between offices and across the year. Durham and Newport typically have shorter waits than London Victoria, but no static fee or schedule page captures live availability; the gov.uk/book-a-passport-appointment service is the only source for current slot status.
  • Overseas service-tier limits. Fast-track and premium same-day services are UK-only because they require attendance at a UK passport office; from abroad, only the gov.uk/overseas-passports standard service is available. This is a process limit set by HMPO, not a pricing position the site takes.
  • The expediter market is deliberately unmonitored. Per the out-of-scope section, the site does not publish or compare expediter rate guidance and so cannot answer specific expediter-vs-direct questions beyond stating the structural premium above HMPO fees.
  • No substitution for HMPO direct application support. Live application questions, document acceptance decisions, and case-file matters sit with HMPO via the 0300 222 0000 helpline.

Editorial position

This site is operated by Digital Signet, an independent AI-development studio. Digital Signet does not sell passport-expediter services, does not run a passport-photo business, does not act as a travel agency, and does not accept paid placements from any expediter or photo service. See /about for the operator background and the wider editorial framework.

Editorial direction is set by the Digital Signet editorial team. Drafts are produced via Digital Signet's autonomous AI development methodology and reviewed against the editorial framework and the source policy on this page before publication.

Corrections process

For corrections, source disputes, or scenarios that do not fit cleanly within the framework above: oliver@digitalsignet.com. The most useful corrections cite the gov.uk or ImmD page that contradicts the figure on the site so the source-vs-site delta can be resolved against the authoritative schedule. Corrections with a source URL receive a reply within 5 business days; LAST_VERIFIED is rolled forward as part of the fix.

Please do not email about live emergency situations or lost-passport-while-travelling questions. The HMPO helpline is 0300 222 0000 for live UK applications. For lost passport situations abroad, the appropriate response is the relevant British embassy or consulate via gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice.
