Important: unused validity is lost
If your current passport has 3 years remaining and you change your name after marriage, those 3 years are cancelled. A new 10-year passport starts from the issue date. You cannot carry over unused months from a name change application (unlike a standard renewal). If your passport has significant time remaining and you are not changing your name for travel purposes, consider whether it is worth waiting.
