How Fast Track Works: Step by Step

1
Apply online at gov.uk

Use the urgent passport service at gov.uk/get-a-passport-urgently. It checks which services you are eligible for, then you book the appointment, apply and pay. You need your old passport (if you have one), a digital photo and a card.

2
Receive your PEX reference

Your confirmation email and appointment texts carry your application reference, which starts with PEX. Keep it for the appointment.

3
Choose your passport office and time

Pick any of the 7 UK passport offices. The earliest fast track appointment is the next day after you apply, and you can book up to 3 weeks ahead. Check other offices if your nearest has no slot.

4
Attend with documents

Bring your PEX reference, your old passport if you have one, and any documents the online service told you to bring. No printed photos: the urgent service takes a digital photo when you apply online.

5
Passport delivered by courier

HMPO processes your application after the appointment. Your new passport is delivered by courier 1 week after your appointment.

UK Passport Office Locations

Fast track requires an in-person appointment at one of these 7 offices. HM Passport Office does not publish waiting times by office. The booking step shows live appointment slots at all 7 offices, and you can choose any of them.

Important Fast Track Rules

  • Fast track covers renewals, changes to personal details, replacing a lost, stolen or damaged passport, and child passports
  • It cannot be used for a first adult passport: that goes through the standard service
  • Changing an appointment is free more than 48 hours ahead; cancelling for a refund inside 48 hours costs a £34.50 admin fee, and a missed appointment is not refunded
  • If you have already applied and are waiting, paying for fast track will not get the passport sooner and costs a £34.50 admin fee per extra application
  • Fast track is not available from overseas - UK applicants only

Fast Track Passport FAQs

Can I fast track a child's passport?
Yes. Fast track for children under 16 costs £156.50 (from 8 April 2026). Premium same-day is only for renewing an adult passport, making fast track the quickest option for a child passport.
Do I need proof of travel for fast track?
No. The gov.uk urgent passport service does not ask for proof of travel. When you apply it asks for your old passport (if you have one), a digital photo and a payment card; at the appointment you need your PEX reference and any documents the service told you to bring. How do I book a fast track passport appointment?
Apply online at gov.uk and select fast track. After submitting, you receive a PEX reference number. Use gov.uk/get-a-passport-urgently, where you book the slot, apply and pay in one journey. Try different office locations if your nearest is booked up.
What if fast track appointments are fully booked?
Check all 7 passport office locations: HM Passport Office does not publish waiting times by office. If all fast track slots are unavailable and travel is imminent, try the Premium same-day service. Contact the HMPO helpline on 0300 222 0000 for guidance.
