Highland and Island Residents
For applicants in the Highlands, Western Isles, Orkney, or Shetland, a passport-office trip is a serious undertaking. Practical considerations:
- Highland residents may find a return train from Inverness to Glasgow takes most of a day. Premium same-day works if you book an early-morning slot and stay overnight. Many use fast track instead and have the new passport couriered home.
- Orkney and Shetland residents face the additional cost of a ferry or flight to mainland Scotland. Premium costs £47.50 more than adult fast track (£239.50 against £192), so add your own ferry or flight fare to whichever service you compare.
- Western Isles residents typically travel via Stornoway-Ullapool-Inverness-Glasgow, requiring an overnight stay. Plan for at least two full days off work.
HMPO does not offer mobile passport services or remote interviews. The Glasgow visit is mandatory for fast track and premium throughout Scotland.
Glasgow vs Durham for Borders Applicants
Residents of the Scottish Borders, Dumfries and Galloway, and northern Northumberland sometimes have a genuine choice between Glasgow and Durham. Check both for slots; journey times compare like this:
| From | Glasgow | Durham | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carlisle | 1 hr 30 min train | 1 hr 30 min train | Toss-up; check slot availability |
| Hawick | 2 hours by road | 2 hours by road | Either workable |
| Berwick-upon-Tweed | 2 hr 30 min train | 1 hr 30 min train | Durham easier |
| Dumfries | 1 hr 30 min train | 2 hr 30 min train | Glasgow easier |
HM Passport Office does not publish waiting times by office. The booking step shows live appointment slots at all 7 offices, and you can choose any of them. For Borders applicants, Glasgow and Durham are both realistic choices.
