Urgent UK Passport in 1 Week

In one paragraph

For travel in roughly a week, fast track at £192 is the standard answer. You apply online, get a PEX reference, book a passport office appointment, attend, and the new passport arrives by courier within about a week. For travel in 1 to 2 days, the only option is premium same-day at £239.50: attend in person, collect 4 hours later, adults only.

Decision Tree: Which Service Do I Actually Need?

Travel in 6+ weeks

Save £90

Standard online at £102. No need for any urgent service. Gov.uk guidance is usually within 3 weeks, leaving comfortable margin even in the summer peak.

Travel in 4 to 6 weeks

Probably standard

Standard online at £102 is very likely to deliver in time: guidance is usually within 3 weeks. Apply now; only escalate to fast track if HMPO contacts you needing more information or an interview.

Travel in 2 to 4 weeks

Fast track

Fast track at £192. Standard might just make it but leaves no margin if HMPO needs more checks. Fast track delivers within about a week of the appointment, so this window is comfortable. Book the appointment immediately.

Travel in 1 to 2 weeks

Fast track urgently

Fast track at £192, but book the earliest available appointment across all 7 offices. HM Passport Office does not publish waiting times by office, so check every office for the nearest slot.

Travel in 1 to 2 days

Premium same-day

Premium same-day at £239.50 is the only viable option. Adults only. Book a slot, attend in the morning, collect 4 hours later. No premium for under-16s; for an urgent child passport, fast track at £156.50 is the best you can do.

Travel tomorrow morning

Already too late

Premium same-day requires an appointment slot. If you cannot get one today, you cannot fly tomorrow morning. Options: rebook the flight (most airlines allow this for a fee), apply for premium same-day for a later day, or fly without if your destination accepts emergency travel documents (rare).

Fast Track Step by Step

1
Apply online at gov.uk

Complete the standard online passport application at gov.uk/renew-adult-passport. Select fast track when prompted. You will need a recent photo, your current passport details, and a card to pay the £192 fee.

2
Receive your PEX reference

Within minutes of submitting, HMPO emails you a PEX (Passport Examination) reference number. Keep this; you need it to book the appointment.

3
Book a passport office appointment

Go to gov.uk/get-a-passport-urgently with your PEX reference. The system shows availability at all 7 UK offices. Choose the earliest workable slot. HM Passport Office does not publish waiting times by office, so check the others if your nearest has no slot.

4
Attend with documents

Bring your PEX reference, your old passport if you have one, and any documents the online service told you to bring. No printed photos: the urgent service takes a digital photo when you apply online.

5
Receive your passport

HMPO processes the application after the appointment. Your new passport is couriered to you 1 week after the appointment. Track via the HMPO email confirmation.

If Every Office Is Booked Out

Peak summer can mean every available slot at every office for your timeframe is taken. Options in order of preference:

  • Check again later. Other applicants change and cancel appointments, so slots can reappear. HMPO publishes no release schedule.
  • Check premium same-day instead of fast track. If you are renewing an adult passport, premium has its own appointments and costs £47.50 more (£239.50 against £192).
  • Consider rebooking your travel. Calculate the cost of the rebook against the cost of the urgent passport service. Some travel insurers cover passport-delay rebooking; check your policy.
  • Contact HMPO directly. Phone 0300 222 0000 (Monday to Friday 08:00 to 20:00, Saturday and Sunday 09:00 to 17:30). For genuinely exceptional cases (medical emergency, bereavement), HMPO can sometimes find a slot or arrange a specific accommodation.
  • Last resort: change the booking. Most airlines allow name and date changes for a fee, particularly for passport-related issues with prior notice. Cost varies wildly; check before assuming.

Total Cost of Urgency (Fee Plus Your Own Costs)

Time off workYour ownYour own
Total£192 + your costs£239.50 + your costs

The headline fees (£192 / £239.50) are not the full cost. Factor in travel, time off work, and any food or hotel for the wait. For premium same-day specifically, you also wait about 4 hours near the office, so travel distance matters more.

When Not to Pay for Urgency

Gov.uk guidance is that standard applications usually complete within 3 weeks. If you have 6+ weeks until travel, the math usually says save the money:

  • gov.uk guidance is that standard applications usually take up to 3 weeks, longer if HMPO needs more information or an interview.
  • HMPO publishes no seasonal turnaround figures, so leave yourself a buffer in busy travel months.
  • HMPO sends an email at submission and again at issue, so you can monitor progress.

If you submit now and HMPO sends a delay warning two weeks before your travel date, fast track is still available as an upgrade (with some logistical friction). Better to start standard and escalate than to pay for fast track upfront when standard would have sufficed.

Urgent Passport FAQ

Can I get a UK passport in 1 day?
Yes, with premium same-day at £239.50. You attend a passport office appointment in the morning and collect the new passport within 4 hours. Adults only. Children cannot use premium; fast track at £156.50 with a one-week turnaround is the under-16 equivalent.
What is the cheapest way to get a passport quickly?
Fast track at £192 is the cheapest urgent option. It delivers within about a week of the passport office appointment. If you can wait around 3 to 4 weeks, the standard online service at £102 is £90 cheaper and usually completes within 3 weeks per gov.uk guidance.
Can I walk into a passport office today?
No. UK passport offices are appointment only. You must apply online first, receive your PEX reference, then book an appointment via gov.uk/get-a-passport-urgently. Walk-in service does not exist at any of the 7 UK offices.
Does fast track guarantee a passport in 1 week?
Approximately. The HMPO service standard for fast track is about 1 week from appointment to courier delivery, but it can occasionally take 8 to 10 working days. If your travel is exactly 7 days away and fast track is your only option, premium same-day is the safer choice if available.
Can I claim back the extra cost of fast track on travel insurance?
Sometimes. Some travel insurance policies cover passport replacement costs in specific circumstances (theft abroad, document loss). The vast majority do not cover the cost gap between standard and fast-track for routine renewals. Check your policy wording carefully before assuming a refund is possible.
